Duterte signed the ‘neutral desks’ law
President Rodrigo R. Duterte has signed Republic Act No. 11394 or the Mandatory Provision of Neutral Desks in Educational Institutions Act on Wednesday, August 22.
The law will mandate private and public schools to provide neutral desk for 10 percent of the student population within one year from its effectivity.
Neutral desks refer to the armchairs that are fit for right-handed and left-handed students.
This law aims to address the struggles of left-handed students and was authored by Senator Sonny Angara.
In an interview, Angara stated that “The struggle of left-handed students is real. Many of them end up suffering from back, neck and shoulder pain when they force themselves to use the standard-issue desks.”
